Fire Safety in Your Home: Highly Flammable Everyday Items
There are certain items that we use everyday that we don’t even think about as flammable. Fires can happen quicker and more often than we think, and often times these fires can be avoided or prevented. We can start by checking the following list of everyday items that are highly flammable and making sure that they are properly stored or taken care of.
Flammable Item #1 – Rubbing Alcohol
A common item found in many medicine cabinets, this is one of the most flammable items that are found in people’s homes. It can easily start a fire if it comes into contact with any open flames. To prevent this from happening, make sure it isn’t being stored in a place that is next to high heat or open flames of any kind. If your medicine cabinet is near the heater or water heater, you may want to consider moving the rubbing alcohol.
Flammable Item #2 – Aerosols
Aerosols include air fresheners, deodorants, hair spray, spray paints, sunscreens, and some cleaning products. Keep these items away from high heat, they are especially vulnerable to combustion with pressure due to temperature.
Flammable Item #3 – Nail Polish & Remover
Acetone is one of the main ingredients inside most nail polishes and nail polish removers. Acetone, like rubbing alcohol, is highly flammable. Remain cautious of your surroundings while using these products, and make sure you aren’t using them near open flames, candles, or other household items that are flammable.
While this list is a great start, you may also want to consider your mattress, dryer lint, and cooking oils. Make sure you are checking your home at least once a year to ensure that these products are in safe areas and well maintained.
